“If you love someone, bring them to Verona”,
is the slogan of the celebration organized during the week of Valentine’s Day, with many theatrical and musical performances. The whole city honors the Saint of Lovers. From the 10th to the 14th of February in Verona, love in all its forms is celebrated. The streets are decorated with red hearts for four days of music, activities, holiday markets and lots of love, in small but so beautiful Verona. The romantic and at the same time tragic story of Romeo and Juliet, which takes place in Verona, comes to mind.
Most people know Verona as the city of lovers. And this is because the great dramatist William Shakespeare chose this city as the place where the most shocking romantic but also tragic legend took place. That of Romeo and Juliet. So everyday thousands of tourists come to see up close something that never existed, Juliet’s house and Juliet’s balcony, which was added in 1928 for … tourist reasons. The Capuleti house is located at 23 Via Cappello, in the historic center of the city. Every year in Verona, thousands of lovers from all corners of the globe arrive here, at Juliet’s house, for the Valentine’s Day, take vows of eternal love, make marriage proposals, etc. Others buy souvenirs with dominant red hearts, while their honor they have all kinds of padlocks that mentally lock love, while others leave thousands of love notes on the walls with poems, wishes, dedications.

But Verona is not only about lovers.
Built on the banks of the Adige River, it is also the city of good food, arts, music, and culture in general. Medieval, historical, beautiful, romantic, and well-kept, it will fascinate every traveler in all seasons of the year.
Its historical center is literally a feast for the eyes and a journey into the past. A point of departure, meeting and relaxation, is the city’s Arena located in the picturesque Piazza Bra. From there, get lost in the dozens of small alleys and pedestrian streets. In every corner or small and large square you will discover something new and exciting. Don’t forget that you are in Italy, so when it comes to coffee, wine, good food and shopping you will find them in abundance.
The historic center of Verona is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
And something unrelated to love but related to the Greeks, the existence of the Hellas Verona football team founded in 1903 by Italian students studying classical Hellenistic studies. The name Hellas (in honor of our homeland) remains even today.

Saint Valentine
During the Middle Ages, Valentine got established as one of the most important saints. According to legend, Saint Valentine was a priest who lived during the 3rd century AD, who secretly married couples in love.
A different version wants Valentine to be put to death because he helped Christians escape from imprisonment and torture. Saint Valentine is celebrated right in the middle of February, as he died on that day around 270 AD.
There is a romantic story that explains why we call our partner “Valentine” or “Valentine”. Valentine, while in prison refusing to renounce his faith, fell in love with his jailer’s daughter, to whom he sent a letter signed: “With love from your Valentine.”
Saint Valentine is not mentioned anywhere in the Orthodox calendar and, naturally, the Orthodox Church has never acknowledged him. In turn, the Catholic Church in its calendar revision in 1969 relegated Valentine’s Day to a local holiday on February 14. However, the foreign Saint began to enter our lives for good in the late 70s with the initiative of… florists.
However, it is a good opportunity, under the pretext of his feast day, to confess our love or to remind him and we offer at least a smile, a hug and why not, a trip to Verona!
